I’m under 25, and I have an acoustic guitar. It is therefore my duty to write the “Ex-girlfriend Song”.
Well, I’m not one for modern values, so I decided that I wouldn’t write a song; I’d play a guitar piece instead. Take that, convention!
This piece remained untitled for about 6-7 months after I’d written it. I’d originally written it for my girlfriend at the time but instead, this is named after the open mic society at University of Sheffield – Open Space.
There is a distinct possibility that I may have been listening to too much of Blackbird (by John Lennon) and Newton Faulkner at the time of writing, but I don’t think you can tell.
